Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island, or CFFSI or just Coconut Fred for short, is an American-Canadian cartoon created by Sammy Oriti and Don Oriolo for Kids' WB. It debuted on September 17, 2005 alongside Johnny Test and Loonatics Unleashed. The series was produced by Warner Bros. Animation.

Plot[]

The show takes place on an island inhabited exclusively by fruits. The residents enjoy their own tropical paradise without a care in the world; they must share their peaceful utopia with the joyfully strange Coconut Fred, a whimsical, blissfully foolish coconut with the special ability to materialize anything he thinks about. The plot revolves around the adventures of Fred and his friends, as his boundless imagination springs to life while his friends struggle to cover up the collateral. Any conflict could range from getting a "fruit canal", to sailing off the island only to find themselves in a humongous storm.

Home media[]

The show has never seen a release on any home media formats, including digitally. However, on 2012, Warner Archive (a division of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment dedicated to releasing less-demanded titles from the Warner Bros. archive) put up a poll on their Facebook page with six shows up for voting, among them being Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island. This very likely meant that the show was considered for a MOD-DVD release as part of the Warner Archive library, but while four of the shows (Detention, Histeria!, Ozzy & Drix and Road Rovers, all fellow Kids' WB shows) have since received DVD releases under Archive, the show, alongside Firehouse Tales (another show listed in the poll), has not been released under the Archive title.[6]

Reception[]

The show has received mixed reviews. Some have praised the animation and creativity, but has been criticized for its often physical humor. Joly Herman of Common Sense Media posted a review of Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island on Go.com. The review describes the show as "the TV equivalent of sugary cereal, and nothing more", and proceeded to give the show two stars out of five. The show ended on May 27, 2006 with thirteen episodes due to low ratings.

Trivia[]

  • Due to the negative feedback, the series was cancelled after only thirteen episodes
  • Many viewers had criticized the show for being a knockoff of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants.
  • There is a rumor about how Rob Paulsen, the voice actor for the titular character stated in a podcast that he regrets voicing Fred and the show was just a shameless Spongebob knockoff.
    • However, this has been debunked. in the actual podcast clip all he says is that he was aware it was an obvious Spongebob rip-off. He doesn't actually regret voicing Fred, as he just viewed it as a gig that he got paid for and nothing else.
  • Go! Go! Moba Boy! was turned down a series after a pilot in favor of Coconut Fred.
  • In 2006, the series was nominated for 2 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Special Class Animated Program and Outstanding Sound Editing - Live Action and Animation at the 33rd Daytime Emmy Awards.
